Xtra Mile Events have confirmed Macmillan Cancer Support as Headline Charity Partner for the 2017 Leeds Triathlon, which takes place on Sunday 3rd September.

The popular open water sprint and standard triathlon will now be called the Macmillan Leeds Triathlon.

The Macmillan Leeds Triathlon takes place in Leeds’ famous Roundhay Park, which provides a perfect setting for this key date in the UK triathlon calendar. The event comprises an open water swim in Waterloo Lake, a fast cycle on quiet but challenging roads and a final run section through the grounds offering magnificent views of the parkland, mansion and scenery beyond.

Each year large crowds of spectators turn out to cheer on the athletes at the many viewing spots along each leg of the course. It makes for a great day out for friends and family and guarantees a fantastic atmosphere for the competitors.

As Headline Charity Partner, Macmillan Cancer Support is offering 20 free places in the Macmillan Leeds Triathlon in return for a pledge to raise £300 in sponsorship to support those affected by cancer. The free places are offered on a first come, first served basis.

Macmillan Cancer Support is one of the largest charities in the UK, providing practical, medical and financial support for better cancer care. Every £100 that Macmillan spends on their phone service could lead to their cancer support specialists helping people affected by cancer to claim the £4,092 in benefits they are entitled to.

Triathletes wishing to support Macmillan and join Team Macmillan at the 2017 Macmillan Leeds Triathlon should go to www.xtramileevents.com/events/leeds-triathlon and click on the link to sign up to a free charity place.

In return for helping to make a difference to people whose lives are affected by cancer, participants will receive: a free Macmillan vest or t-shirt; a Macmillan tri belt, swimming cap and wetsuit arm band; a dedicated triathlon training and fundraising guide; access to Macmillan’s online training zone; a 50% discount on online triathlon coaching service oxygenaddict.com, and plenty of support on race day to help them reach the finish line.

The standard distance race at the Macmillan Leeds Triathlon comprises a 1500m swim, a 44km cycle and a 9.4km run. The sprint distance race takes place on the same course and comprises a 750m swim, a 24km cycle and a 6.4km run.

Race Director Simon Hill commented: “We are delighted to welcome Macmillan Cancer Support as Headline Charity Partner for the Leeds Triathlon. This family-friendly event is the perfect opportunity to combine taking part in a high profile race with a family day out in Roundhay Park, whilst raising valuable funds for Macmillan.

The event includes a standard and a sprint distance race as well as team relays, which makes it accessible to athletes of all levels. We are very much looking forward to what promises to be a day of superb sporting achievement and important fundraising.”

Lizzie Quill, Triathlon Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “Macmillan is proud to be partnering with the 2017 Leeds Triathlon which is a key fixture in the UK triathlon scene. Whether you or someone you know has been affected by cancer, or you simply want to enhance your personal challenge, we want as many people as possible to join Team Macmillan to raise money so no one has to face cancer alone.”

A maximum of 750 race places are available and entries close on 30th August 2017 or when sold out.

Macmillan Cancer Support has also been confirmed as the official charity partner for Oulton Park Spring Duathlon, Wilmslow Triathlon, Llandudno Sea Triathlon, South Manchester Triathlon and Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon, with free places available on a first come first serve basis.
