Dudley and Righini-Brand winners of Leeds Xpress Triathlon

The Leeds Xpress Triathlon took place last weekend (Sunday 28th July), with Jonathan Dudley (Wetherby Runners) and Hannah Righini-Brand taking the winning titles after the triathlon had to be reverted to an Aquathlon due to circumstances out of the organisers' control.

A fatal car accident on the A61, in the middle of the bike route, took place just after the race had started. The crash was unrelated to the event and resulted in the A61 being closed and the race format having to be altered with the 22.6 km bike leg omitted and the course reverted to an aquathlon with a 400m swim and a 5 km run.

A popular and well-established race, the Leeds Xpress Triathlon attracts triathletes of all levels each year, with just under 400 triathletes signed up for 2013 including corporate teams from TEVA UK, Strata Homes and the Army Foundation College. A total of 315 competitors crossed the finish line at the Grammar School after a 400m swim in the 6 lane heated indoor pool and a 5.5 km off road run. Jonathan Dudley, one of the youngest triathletes competing in the 16-19 age group category, put in a fantastic performance and won by over a minute in a time of 00:22:44, beating Mika Brown into second and Robert Saxby into third place.

In the women's field Hannah Righini-Brand took the win in 00:28:17 with Julie Bucknell (Wetherby Runners) running in second in 00:29:39. Emma Wills came third in 00:30:17.

Race Director Simon Hill commented: "I would like to express a big thank you to all the triathletes who took part in the Leeds Xpress Triathlon, and issue an apology to anyone who felt disappointed after the forced omission of the bike leg. This was due to circumstances beyond our control, and a decision that had to be made to ensure the health and safety of our competitors and in co-operation with West Yorkshire Police.

A big thank you also goes to The Grammar School at Leeds for allowing us to use the fantastic facilities, as well as to West Yorkshire Police, the Xtra Mile Events Crew, Manchester Medical Services and British Triathlon Federation for their help with staging this event."

One of the highlights of the day was Barry Mcguire proposing to Ruth Dobby at the finish line on her 40th birthday.

Sponsors of the Leeds Xpress Triathlon 2013 included Up & Running (Offici= al Sports Retail Partner), Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative (Official Bicycle Retail Partner), Starley Bikes (Official Specialist Bike Brand), USNUltimate Sports Nutrition (Official Nutrition Partner), Zone3 (Official Wetsuit Partner), Clif Bar (Official Energy Bar Partner), Aftershokz (Official Headphone Partner) and Athlete Matters (Official Physio and Rehab Partner).
