2017 Macmillan Leeds Triathlon Review

The Macmillan Leeds Triathlon took place yesterday, Sunday 3rd September 2017, at the city’s iconic Roundhay Park and was blessed with clear skies. Hundreds of competitors and supporters made their way to the stunning green parklands that host this annual sporting event, which happens to be one of our legacy events in the triathlon calendar.

Once again the Macmillan Leeds Triathlon proved to be a day of fantastic sporting achievement and huge crowd support. The action started with the first wave at 8am at Waterloo Lake, where friends and families were already gathered to cheer on competitors whilst enjoying a day out.

The standard distance race incorporated a 1.5 km open water swim in Waterloo Lake, a fast and scenic 44 km cycle leg and a 9.4 km run in the beautiful setting of Roundhay Park. Athletes in the sprint distance race completed a 750m swim, a 24 km cycle and a 6.4 km run.

Athletes were able to enjoy support during all stages of the event thanks to many viewing points along the course, including along the drive in front of the mansion for the grand downhill finish.

Another important thing to mention is that athletes managed to fundraise for Macmillan Cancer Support nearly £12,000 which will contribute a lot to the overall work done by this amazing charity.

In the standard race Beau Smith took 1st place. Coming out of the water in a time of 19:07 in and after a fast cycle and run, he finished in an astonishing time of 2:01:47 over 6 minutes ahead of 2nd place winner Alberto Sanchez, who finished in 2:07:55.  Aislinn Predergast was the fastest in the women’s field and crossed the finish line in 02:25:41. Runner up Emily Legg finished in 02:27:00 and Rachel Wiseman took third place in 02:27:26.

The sprint race saw Rodger Wilkins take the win in a time of 01:14:05, ahead of Sean Watson who finished in 01:14:33 and Tim Buckley in 01:17:33. Sarah Jepson claimed the women’s title in 01:30:07, with Helen Mason coming second in 01:30:18 and Alison Crellin securing third place in 01:33:25.
